Wallpaper Warehouse

Thanks for stopping by my virtual warehouse. If you're searching for desktop wallpaper, you've come to the right place, or at least a right place. Admittedly, I'm rather biased on the subject matter I offer, but hopefully you'll find something to your liking.

I found all the material I used for my wallpaper all over the net during the last four years or so. Some of it was already sized for wallpaper, some of it only needed minor editing to enable it to fit and some of it took several hours of work to remove undesirable background material. I'm happy to make some of my far too numerous wallpapers available to you, but if you have the time, and the patience, creating wallpaper isn't very hard to do.

I use Microsoft's Paint program, the one that comes with Windows, to do most of the touchup work. I then use another program to resize those graphics that need it. If you should wish to try your own hand at it, you should be able to find several shareware or even freeware programs that are capable of resizing graphics. Or you could even shop around for one at a real software store. :-)

The wallpaper I'm presenting here is designed for a desktop setting of 640 x 480. This was the desktop size I was using at the time I was most heavily into creating wallpaper. Many of the wallpapers I create today are still sized 640 x 480 because the graphics become too distorted at larger sizes. If your desktop is set to a larger size, 800 x 600 for example, as mine now is, and you're using Windows 98, you should be able to stretch the smaller wallpaper to fit your desktop. Hopefully this won't distort the graphics too much.

To conserve as much space as possible, and thus be able to display even more wallpaper, all the graphics you find here are in JPG format. What this means to most of you is that you'll have to convert them into BMP format before Windows will allow you to use them for wallpaper. For, what I'm assuming is the minority; there are other alternatives. Though I'm still running Windows 95, I understand that Windows 98 allows the use of JPGs as wallpaper through the use of its active desktop. There are also a number of programs to be found on the web that will allow you to use JPG images as wallpaper. If you don't like any of those, there are also countless graphics programs that, in addition to their other features, are designed to change graphic extensions with a few clicks of the mouse.

If you don't have access to any of the above, there are still a couple of ways that you can use this wallpaper on your computer. The easiest way is to right click on the full image and choose to set it as wallpaper. Be aware, however, that the browser reuses the same slot each time you do so. So if you save ten wallpapers in this fashion, you'll only have the last one saved on your hard drive when you're done. If you're comfortable enough to go into Explorer and change the name of the file each time, you can save multiple wallpapers in BMP format this way.

Here's another way to convert the files into BMP format. Go ahead and save all the wallpapers you like, just remember where you saved them to. Now, go into Explorer and open up the folder with your wallpaper in it. Double click on the file name of the wallpaper you want to change. This should open it in some kind of program. Once the graphic is open, right click on it and choose Copy from the pop up menu. With me so far?

Now, open up Paint, which is usually found under Accessories. Resize the canvas area, making it obviously smaller than the graphic you just copied. You can do this by grabbing the bottom right corner of the canvas with your pointer and dragging it up while holding down your left mouse button. Then go to Edit and click Paste. Answer yes when it asks you if you want to expand the work area. Your soon to be wallpaper should now appear. Go to Edit and choose Save As. This will save the graphic in BMP format. Save it in the Windows folder on your C drive and you'll find it listed with the rest of your backgrounds when you go to change your wallpaper. It may sound a bit complicated, but once you do it a couple of times it becomes fairly simple.

Though I'll try to update at least one or two of my galleries every month, reality may sometimes get in the way. But do please check back. I'll get around to it sooner more often than later. I should also tell you that my stockpile of wallpaper in some galleries is larger than others. In other words, the wallpaper in some galleries will be recycled more often than others. But as I find and create new wallpaper, I'll be adding it to my collection as well. So hopefully all the galleries will continue to grow.

Please drop me a note if you have any questions or suggestions. I'm always happy to hear from people and I do my best to answer all the e-mail I receive. Thanks again for taking the time to visit my little corner of the web. If you like what you see, please tell your friends. Also tell your neighbors, your coworkers, your mail man, the guy sitting in the car next to you at the stop light, . . . ;-)
